Dukan Diet Phases Explained

We only have experience with the first phase, but Dukan is a four phase approach to weight loss and then sustained weight management. Dukan uses primarily a nutrional approach and a modest amount of walking as exercise. Our view is that this diet can be viewed as both a food elimination diet and a food combination diet. You eliminate foods in the first phase of this eating style, eventually re-introducing foods, and then combining foods to get the desired result.

Dukan Diet - Attack Phase One

Phase One is “The Attack Phase”. It is an attempt to reset your metabolism by eliminatting all foods other than lean animal protein for typically 5-10 days (very much like a Carnivore Diet in this first stage). The only real exception is a small amount of oat bran taken with each meal.

There are 72 foods in the approved food list to choose from. You can even push the envelope and purchase "grocery and gourmet foods" that will meet the diet regimen requirements.

During the Dukan Attack Phase, foods should be prepared without any added fat (grilling or roasting is preferred). You also are guided to drink 1.5 to 2 liters of fresh water daily, and instructed to take a 20 minute walk each day.

Whole Foodist Dukan Diet Attack Hack

Now, this is a "Dukan Diet Attach Hack" because I honestly did not follow all the rules. Knowing what my body likes and because I always try to eat low carb. For instance, I substituted flaxseed for the oat bran. The lowest recommended amount of oat bran has around 65+ grams of carbohydrates. Too much for my liking. Plus, we know oats are a cereal and most likely are now GMO. Most grain products in the US are now genetically modified. So, the oat bran was definitely a “no-go”. Another issue is the lean cuts of meats. I usually eat 80/20 ground beef, chicken breasts, and some fresh ground pork, plus bacon, beef smoked sausage, and small amounts of cheese. Therefore, this definitely is not exactly the lean protein (low fat) profile.

Because it is so unconventional, the Dukan Diet gets poor marks from the medical profession and MSM (Main Stream Media). So, you know it must be a pretty good diet. I did my Dukan Diet Attach Hack for 7 ½ days and lost almost 5 pounds. I would say this is a legitimate “Whole Foodist” style of eating. Anyone should be able to do this for a week. I was never hungry and probably overate compared to what I usually eat.

Medical Considerations

As always, if you have medical issues or are taking medications, you should clear this style of eating with your primary care physician. You can expect most doctors will likely caution you not to eat this way for any length of time.
